The Portrait of Diego Martelli by Degas

Portrait of Diego Martelli
Oil on canvas, 1879
110 x 100 cm (43 x 39)
Here in Portrait Of Diego Martelli, one of Degas’ most successful portraits, as in The Star he takes an unusually high angle of view, also placing the figure off-centre.
Martelli was an Italian critic and the earliest writer to describe the importance of the Impressionist movement to his countrymen. In Degas’ portrait we see him surrounded by the clutter of his profession, his slippers cast aside and his eyes averted from the viewer, apparently unaware of the artist’s intrusion, caught with the spontaneity of a snapshot.
However, despite the seeming randomness of the elements which comprise the picture, as always Degas produced a multitude of preliminary sketches to achieve his apparently instantaneous result.
