Dance at Bougival was one of three nearly life size pictures of couples dancing painted between 1882 and 1883. Renoir’s brother Edmond and his model Suzanne Valadon posed for this work, which contains elements of the happiness of his previous Le Moulin de la Galette and Luncheon of the Boating Party.
However, despite the obvious Impressionist methods, Renoir was by now seeking a more classically linear and modelled style and a concern for detail that has resulted in his including such minutiae as used matches and cigarette butts on the ground.
Renoir is so completely identified with the spirit of the scene that every resource of his art contributes to the evocation of something wonderful and precious. This near life sized painting was exhibited soon after completion by Durand-Ruel in London where Renoir had a small but growing following.
