When Jean was born in 1894 Gabrielle Renard, Aline’s cousin, was hired as a nursemaid. She had joined the Renoir household at the age of 16 and had become very much one of the family as well as Renoir’s favourite model.

Over the next twenty years she posed for Renoir on countless occasions – either on her own or, as here, helping to amuse the children.

In Renoir’s close-knit family group everyone understood that painting came first in his life and there were no competing interests. Thus, all his family posed for him, though the children sometimes did so reluctantly and had to be threatened or bribed to persuade them to sit or stand still.
