Le Moulin de la Galette is such a scene that we can understand why it has been said that “Renoir put his contemporaries into pictures”, and along with the Luncheon of the Boating Party, this is perhaps the most successful of all Impressionism.

The windmill in Montmartre, Paris, converted into an open-air dance hall and known as ‘la Galette’ after a kind of cake served there, was a popular weekend venue for working-class people, students and artists.

It offered ‘a pleasurable suggestion of low life’, as one writer described it. Renoir took this canvas there every Sunday for a number of weeks, painting entirely on the spot. As in Manet's Tuileries, the subjects were mostly the artist’s friends, one of whom, George Riviere (seated at the table on the right), described the painting in his journal L’ Impressionism as “a page of history, a precious monument of Parisian life depicted with rigorous exactness; nobody before him had thought of capturing some aspects of daily life in a canvas of such large dimensions”.
