The Bathers, a masterpiece of Renoir’s “sour period”, represents an amazing summation of everything he had done and learned.

Renoir passed quite rapidly through his ‘reappraisal’ phase: a natural buoyancy and love of light and colour soon reasserted itself. But in the gradual parting of the ways that overtook the Impressionists during the mid-1880s he, too, found that he was making his own way in a direction rather different from the rest.

The first clear statement of this was in this large composition completed in 1887, the year after the last Impressionist group show. As a result, partly, of his studies of Ingres and the disciplines of classical draughtsmanship, he had arrived at a new style which combined his old love of warm, glowing color and appreciation of the amply rounded female form with a new crispness of outline and a sharper definition of form.

The bathers was for him something of an essay in the grand manner, planned and worked on over three years (the principle model being Suzanne Valadon, herself a painter and the mother of Maurice Utrillo, who had been born four years before).

When it was exhibited it achieved a large success with the public, although Pissarro disliked a certain arbitrariness and lack of unity in it and only Van Gogh of the Impressionists’ later associates wholly approved.
