The portrait of Claude Monet in his mid thirties was exhibited at the second Impressionist exhibition. Renoir visited Monet at Argenteuil after the 1874 exhibition and painted several portraits of him and his family. This was a particularly bleak period in Renoir’s life: at the disastrous sale at the Hotel Drouot his paintings gained the lowest prices of all and his attempt to have paintings exhibited at the Salon was unsuccessful.

However, he met the collectors Victor Chocquet and Gustave Caillebotte at this time and they were to provide him with the financial support he desperately needed.
