After his trips to Italy where he saw Raphael’s frescoes and Pompeiian wall paintings and concluded that he had followed the Impressionist route as far as it could take him, Renoir underwent a period of reappraisal of his work and arrived at a more formal and decorative style, of which The Umbrellas is a good example.

In fact, painted during the period when his work was in transition, it shows clearly both his earlier Impressionist style, particularly in the little girls and their mother on the right, and his more refined techniques of the mid-80s in the painting of the girl with a hat box as well as in the complex decorative arrangement of the formally contoured figures and umbrellas.
