In 1892 Renoir was commissioned by the French State to produce a major new painting to be hung in the prestigious Luxembourg Palace, a museum devoted to the work of the living artists.

Keen to make a good impression, Renoir painted six versions – one pastel and five oils – of this picture, leaving the final selection to Henri Roujon, the French Minister of Fine Arts. Somewhat spoilt for choice, the Minister eventually decided on the picture shown above. Later, Renoir felt that the State’s purchase, for which he had received 4,000 francs, was not necessarily the best. Yet despite Renoir’s reservations, the painting was considered a success when it was first shown.

As a result of the State’s recognition, his works became more fashionable and demand for them increased, securing the artist’s financial future.
