San Giorgio Maggiore at DuskOil on canvas Among Monet’s farthest travels in search of new stimuli was a trip to Venice in 1908. While Manet had been inspired, more than 30 years before, by the crisp, clear air and brilliant sunlight of the city, Monet’s response was closer to Turner’s misty and magical evocations. In San Giorgio Maggiore, everything is half-glimpsed through a veil of mist, with the sun shining through from behind the church in the center. Like Monet’s notorious Impression Sunrise of 1872, this work might stand as a classic Impressionist statement – except that, by this stage in his career, Monet was not so strict about working entirely on the spot, and very likely he sketched this and his other Venetian subjects on site and completed them at Giverny.
