Self Portrait With Bandaged Ear by Van Gogh

Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear
Oil on canvas, 1889
The Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear shows Vincent Van Gogh after he had cut off part of his ear in December 1888, following a quarrel with Gauguin, with whom he had been sharing a house, the Yellow House in Arles.
The two painters, although friends, often did not get on, Gauguin even threatened to return to Paris. One evening, as he walked in the public gardens Gauguin saw Van Gogh approaching him in a threatening manner and decided to spend the night at a hotel.
Next day, on returning to the Yellow House, he found the police there, Van Gogh having been taken to hospital, almost lifeless. Apparently, he had presented the severed ear to a prostitute at the local brothel, and returned home to lie bleeding all night in his bed.
