The Van Gogh Sunflowers picture, perhaps Vincent’s best known painting, is one of a series of works on the same theme executed during his stay in Arles.

He originally planned to produce twelve such paintings to decorate the studio he intended to share with Gauguin, or possibly the guest room of his ‘Yellow House’. Gauguin’s stay was short lived, however. Gauguin is known to have admired these paintings, most of which were completed before his arrival in Arles, but later arrogantly claimed to have exerted an influence on his painting of these subjects: “From that day Van Gogh made astonishing progress; he seemed to become aware of everything that was in him, and thence came all the series of sunflowers after sunflowers in brilliant sunshine”.

The sunflowers shows two of the most obvious characteristics of van Gogh’s technique. One is the way he draws with his brush producing angular and brittle brushstrokes, which convey so readily his nervous and excited personality and create the tension within the painting; he was by nature perhaps always more a draftsman than a painter.

The other is the manner in which he used thick ‘impasto’ paint to give the painting a sculptural and tactile presence. Writing about an earlier painting, he said “It struck me how sturdily those little stems were rooted in the ground. I began painting them with a brush, but because of the surface (of the canvas) was already so heavily covered, a brush-stroke was lost in it – then I squeezed the roots and trunks in from the tube, and modelled it a little with the brush. Yes – now they stand there rising from the ground, strongly rooted in it”.
