Despite the tumultuous state of his mind, aggravated by his brother’s business and domestic problems, Van Gogh was very calm and clear in his assessment of the painting which he described in a letter: “I have done a bigger picture of the village church, an effect showing the building purple against a simple, deep blue sky of pure cobalt. The stained-glass windows appear as patches of ultramarine blue, the roof is violet and partly orange. In the foreground there is some grass with flowers and some sand, rose colored with the sun on it. It is almost the same thing that I did at Nuenen of the old tower and the cemetery, but in the present picture the color is more expressive, more rich”.
