Van Gogh painted three portraits of Adeline Ravoux, the daughter of the inn-keeper with whom he was staying when first arriving in Auvers. This one, the most flattering. He gave to his brother Theo.

Adeline was thirteen years old when this portrait was painted and died in 1965 at the ege of eighty-eight. Undoubtedly the last living soul to have had vivid recollections of the artist. Adeline did not like the painting very much, though the new owner who brought the painting on 11 May 1988 during Christie’s auction in New York must have liked it, paying nearly $15,000,000 for it.

The powerful horizontal strokes of the background make the space undefined but accentuate the vertical aspect of the sitting posture of Adeline in blue.
