The Exercise Yard
By Vincent Van Gogh
The Exercise Yard
Oil on canvas, 1889
Also known as The Prison Courtyard, this Vincent van Gogh picture of The Exercise Yard expresses Vincent's feelings at the time.
The painting was made by Van Gogh from a copy of a Gustave Dore print of Newgate prison in London and may reveal the painter’s feelings about being at the asylum at St-Remy-de-Provence.
Although he had gone there voluntarily, not wanting to be alone after his illness at Arles, he had been considerably shocked at meeting the asylum’s inmates. After an artistically busy year during which he produced scores of paintings, he wanted to get away.
"My surroundings here begin to weigh on me", he wrote to his brother, "I have been a patient for more than a year… I can’t go on, I am at the end of my patience, my dear brother, I can’t stand any more. I must make a change – even a desperate one".
